PLC Reports User Manual

8. Global Settings

Settings related globally to the overall application are defined in section „Global Settings“, whereas the section “Report Settings” adjusts parameters related to the respective report file only.

8.1. Selection of the Application Language

Change Application Language ENBy means of the drop-down list located in the section “Application Language”, the user interface language of PLC Reports can be selected. Changing the language is only possible while the reporting system is being stopped. Right beside the drop-down list, the actual application language is being displayed.

8.1.1. Walk-Through: How to Change the Application Language

  1. Select the tab “Application Settings”
  2. Select the desired language from the drop down list
  3. A dialog with a note will be displayed: To change the application language, PLC Reports needs to be restarted. Confirm the dialog by clicking OK.
  4. PLC Reports will be terminated and immediately restarted with the selected language.

8.2. Simulation Mode

Simulation Mode ENWhile creating report templates, it often happens that the final communication connection to the target PLC is not yet available. For instance, a report is prepared in an office and later taken to the production site. To be able to create a report definition independently from the target PLCs, PLC Reports provides a simulation mode for variables.

8.2.1. Simulation Mode Settings

Simulation values can be defined separately for each variable. To simulate a variable value, you can use constants, sawtooth or sinus curves. Value ranges and intervals are adjustable.

Further details about variable simulation settings can be found in chapter “Variables”.

8.2.2. Activating the Simulation Mode

To activate the simulation mode, click the button “Simulation Mode On”.Simulation Mode On

All variables having simulation settings take their simulation values immediately. Variables without simulation settings continue to try receiving their online values from the defined PLC.

8.2.3. Deactivating the Simulation Mode

To deactivate the simulation mode, click the button “Simulation Mode Off”.Simulation Mode Off

The simulation mode stops immediately. All variables will read their values from the defined PLCs.

8.2.4. Simulation Mode Status

The status display shows if the simulation mode is currently on or off.

8.3. Directory Settings

DirectoriesIn section “Directories”, the desired paths for messages, PLC definitions, reports and archives can be chosen.

During installation, all paths are set to “Drive:\Users\Public\ Documents\PLC Reports\…” by default. It is recommended to keep the default settings.

WarningNote!
Use local drives only!

If network drives are used, the performance of PLC Reports will be unpredictable. Time critical tasks like logging variables can be unexpectedly delayed. Queuing of events caused by bad or not-at-all reachable network locations might cause critical errors and can also lead to the loss of the data.

8.3.1. Setting the Messages Path

System events are shown in the message list but important messages are also logged into a csv file. To limit the file size, a new log file is automatically created for each month. The file is stored in the messages directory. Its filename is “Messages Year-Month.csv”.

The default messages path is the subfolder „Messages“ in the Public Documents folder:

“Drive:\Users\Public\Documents\PLC Reports\Messages\”

8.3.1.1. Walk-Through: How to Change the Message Directory

  1. Select the tab “Application Settings”
  2. In section “directories” click the button “Messages Path”Messages Path
  3. A dialog to select a folder opens
  4. Select the desired folder and confirm the dialog by clicking “OK”.

8.3.2. Setting the Report List Path

The home tab of PLC Reports shows the list with all reports to be executed. The settings made there are stored in a separate file whose name is “Reports.dat”. By setting the report list path, the storage location of this file can be defined.

The default report list path is the subfolder „Report List“ in the Public Documents folder:

“Drive:\Users\Public\Documents\PLC Reports\Report List\”

8.3.2.1. Walk-Through: How to Change the Report List Directory

  1. Select the tab “Application Settings”
  2. In section “directories” click the button “Report List Path”Report List Path
  3. A dialog to select a folder opens
  4. Select the desired folder and confirm the dialog by clicking “OK”.

8.3.3. Selecting the PLC Definition File

In section “PLCs” all PLCs to read data from are being defined. Multiple reports can read data from the same PLC. Therefore, PLCs are defined in a central definition file which is used by all reports simultaneously. The filename and the storage path of the PLC definition file are selectable. The default filename is “PLCs.xlsx” and the default location is the subfolder “PLCs” in the Public Documents folder: „Drive:\Users\Public\Documents\PLC Reports\PLCs\PLCs.xlsx“

8.3.3.1. Walk-Through: How to Change the PLC Definition File

  1. Select the tab “Application Settings”
  2. In section “Directories” click the button “PLC Definitions File”PLC Definition File
  3. A dialog to select a file opens
  4. Select the desired file and confirm the dialog by clicking “OK”.

8.3.4. Setting the Archives Path

If archives are defined to store historical variable values, PLC Reports creates one archive file for each defined archive. Archived values can be read overall by reports. Therefore, the archives need to have a system-wide unique name.

The setting “Archives Path” defines where archive files are being stored. The default setting is the subfolder “Archives” in the Public Documents folder:

„Drive:\Users\Public\Documents\PLC Reports\Archives\“

8.3.4.1. Walk-Through: How to Change the Archives Directory

  1. Select the tab “Application Settings”
  2. In section “Directories” click the button “Archives Path”Archives Path
  3. A dialog to select a folder opens
  4. Select the desired folder and confirm the dialog by clicking “OK”.

8.3.5. Setting the Report Output Path

A common storage location valid for all created reports can be selected. If different report types are stored in different locations, the storage location for each single report can be defined in the report settings. If no storage location is set in the report settings, the common storage path is being used. The default setting is the subfolder “Reports” in the Public Documents folder:

„Drive:\Users\Public\Documents\PLC Reports\Reports\“

8.3.5.1. Walk-Through: How to Change the Report Output Directory

  1. Select the tab “Application Settings”
  2. In section “Directories” click the button “Report Output Path”
  3. A dialog to select a folder opens
  4. Select the desired folder and confirm the dialog by clicking “OK”.
